Cupping Notes
Delicious and somewhat delicate, this wet-processed lot from Hambela packs impressive sweetness, and classic Guji cup characteristics. The dry fragrance smells very tea-like, a note of Earl Grey with bergamot to be exact, with pink 'fruit' bubblegum (think Double Bubble!), and some lingering spice notes. Florals start to emerge in the wetted grounds, and breaking the coffee crust released a mix of jasmine, grapefruit, and unrefined cane sugar. City and City+ roasts produce layers of sweetness that when peeled back reveal raw sugars as well as pectin-type, fruited flavors as it cools. In the hot cup, the sweet flavors are like demerara sugar (unrefined cane sugar with some molasses intact), and the jasmine note comes through nicely. As the coffee cools down some, I pick up on more fruited flavor notes like sweet limeade, lychee fruit, orange jello, floral Meyer lemon, and a little golden plum. I don't want to overpromise here with the fruit, but I did find Hambela to be a bit more fruited than some of our other washed Ethiopias.
